Transport Yourself This Holiday Season
Be transported – in time and space – to prewar and World War II England and postwar Germany without flying to Europe. All you need is a getaway to Fulton for a “Churchillian” holiday you’re bound to remember.
America’s National Churchill Museum shines a spotlight on the life of Sir Winston Churchill, from his privileged youth through the trenches of World War I into the terror of the London Blitz, on through Cold War Europe, which he famously predicted in the Iron Curtain Speech he delivered in Fulton in 1946.
Get to know the real British Bulldog, his service, his writings, his extraordinary oratory, and his passionate hobby – painting. The museum boasts one of the largest privately owned collections of Churchilliana in the world.
While there, experience an even earlier, more elegant time in the 17th-century Sir Christopher Wren church, St. Mary the Virgin, Aldermanbury. The church, which was bombed during the Blitz, was imported to Fulton, reconstructed brick by brick, and rededicated in 1969. In addition to the breathtaking architecture and intricate woodcarving, the custom Mander Organ is a can’t miss.
Step outside and come face-to-face with an artifact of post-war Germany, eight sections of the Berlin Wall. One year after wall fell on Nov. 9, 1989, artist Edwina Sandys, granddaughter of Winston Churchill, introduced her sculpture “Breakthrough” to a crowd of 7,000 people gathered outside the museum.
Plan your visit to enjoy an elegant holiday evening at the museum on Nov. 30, timed to coincide with Churchill’s 149th birthday. (Planning is already underway for a very special celebration in 2024 in honor of Sir Winston’s 150th.) Let your spirits soar far beyond the church bell during the Festival of Lessons and Carols on Dec. 10. After a day of touring, treat yourself to a romantic stay at the Loganberry Inn or a fun night at the game-themed Uptown Loft in the Brick District
Just three blocks away, you can shop and dine in Fulton’s delightful downtown Brick District where holiday festivities include the Callaway Singers Choral Program (Dec. 2 and 7) and The Kay Brothers Homegrown Holidays Show (Dec. 9). The events are held at the Brick District Playhouse, Fulton’s repurposed 1920s movie theater. You’ll find an abundance of other holiday activities on Visit Fulton’s events calendar.
The definition of “Churchillian” is something that’s powerful, inspiring and exciting,. exactly what you’ll find during your almost-Europe visit to Fulton. No passport needed.
