Sunday Fun Day
“I wish it was Sunday. ‘Cause that’s my fun day. My don’t have to run day.” A summer weekend get away can take extra planning when so many attractions can be closed on Sunday.
When it comes to Callaway County, The Bangles got it right. Sunday is Fun Day in Fulton! You won’t spend much time between stops, either – because our Fun Day itinerary is only a three-mile trail from start to finish!
From a Model T to a “Back to the Future” DeLorean, explore the fun and history of America’s cars in their historical settings at the Auto World Museum. During the 60th anniversary celebration of Sir Winston Churchill’s “Sinews of Peace” (Iron Curtain) speech, his daughter, Lady Soames, rode in a 1932 Buick – which Auto World Museum has on display. Open 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at 200 Peacock Drive. (For winter hours call 573-544-4500.)
Shop, lunch and linger at Fulton’s newest attraction, The Yard, a gathering place in the Brick District’s backyard at 1005 E. Walnut. Enjoy shaded picnic tables, handmade by Beauty & The Badge Wood Co, games and music – all set alongside the historic Fulton Depot, which is being renovated by its owners. The Yard is the weekend home of the Smokin Pickle food truck. After a signature smashburger or Reuben with housemade pastrami, shop at Homewares by Grae Studio for distinctive home décor, textiles and vintage goods. All three are open 11 a.m.-2 p.m., with extended hours by Smokin Pickle. NOTE: Dangerous heat conditions can effect the schedule. Please visit their Facebook page for updates.
The Yard is not only the newest destination – they’re also just getting started. Future plans include permanent indoor/outdoor dining, an event venue and continuing to open the historic depot for the Christmas Market and spring open house. And they’re planning a series of fun events including Movie Night, Mic Night, Trivia Night and Game night.
If you manage to resist the Smokin Pickle’s campfire sundae, you can satisfy your sweet tooth at Lulu’s Frozen Yogurt, 18 W. Fifth. It’s a fun place to gather with family and friends and enjoy a delicious fro-yo with lots of sprinkle options. Open 1 p.m.-5 p.m.
Next up: a visit to America’s National Churchill Museum – always a fascinating experience, telling the story of Sir Winston Churchill’s life through world class displays, artifacts and Churchill’s own paintings. Nearby, the outdoor sculpture Breakthrough was created by eight sections of the Berlin Wall. Open 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
Don’t miss a Sunday stop at GoPo Gourmet Popcorn, 525 Court Street, to sample their vast variety of flavors. Be sure to check out the August special, lemon meringue! GoPo has hundreds of board games for all ages. If you need a caffeine boost, grab one of their delicious GoJo coffee specials. Open noon-6 p.m.
Dinner anyone? Brooklyn Pizza, 501 Court Street, has been voted the best pizza in rural Missouri and it’s created for you by people who really are from Brooklyn. Open noon-7 p.m. If hot wings and a beer on the patio is more your style, check out The Post Office Bar & Grill at 110 W. Fifth. Open 11 a.m. - midnight.
Before another week starts with a manic Monday – head to Fulton and enjoy a true Sunday Fun Day.
