Cater to Your Every Craving in Callaway County

No matter what you’re up to this summer, one thing we all have in common. We have to eat. And believe me, the eating is great in Callaway County.

Jamolee’s Bakery serves up donuts that can only be described as heavenly. Imagine a slight crispness on the outside, a tender, melt-in-your-mouth inside, and a perfectly balanced glaze. Plus, their specialty pastries are simply irresistible.

And since it’s the season for vacation and treats, let’s cool off with some delightful options you can find in Fulton’s Brick District:

Share a banana split, an old-fashioned phosphate or a made-to-order shake at Saults Drug Store’s 1930s soda fountain. If frozen yogurt is more your thing, head over to Fifth Street to Lulu’s where you can fill your cup by weight and choose from a variety of sprinkles and toppings.

After something sweet, you might find yourself craving something salty – or a treat that is the perfect combination of the two. Go-Po the Gourmet Popcorn Shop uses farm-fresh kernels and high quality ingredients to craft perennial favorites like caramel and cheddar, plus seasonal flavors such as lemon meringue.

And just across the street is The Spot, known for handspun cotton candy in multiple flavors, fresh “smashed” lemonade from traditional to more exotic flavors and shaved ice.

One can’t live on sweets alone (but wouldn’t it be nice?), so it’s a good thing Fulton has an eclectic foodie scene. Explore a world of tasty delights, starting with a delicious visit to Germany at the Fulton Wurst Haus & Butchery featuring a fabulous, expertly selected variety of meats and sausages.

Everyone loves Italian, right? In addition to the delicious pizza at Ohana Pizzeria, chow down on amazing wings, sandwiches in pizza dough pockets, even gluten-free pizza options. Or try  Brooklyn Pizza on Court Street for a completely different style of pizza or an authentic Stromboli. Yeah, the owners are from Brooklyn and it shows!

Add a little more spice to your dining at Fontenot's Po'Boys featuring the best Cajun food outside of New Orleans. Choose from authentic gumbos, shrimp and grits, jambalaya, etouffee, beignets, and po’ boys served on crusty Gambino's French bread. Or head over to the Fulton Café, “a hoppin’ Cuban place.” Iris Atkinson was born in Cuba, and with her husband, John, she’s brought the delicious cuisine of her home to downtown Fulton. The cafe is open for weekday lunches only, so plan accordingly.

Not much is more traditional American than barbecue, and the smell alone will draw you in to MoJo’s BBQ & Grill, where you’ll enjoy 100% hickory wood slow-smoked barbecue, served with love.

Bek’s in the Brick District, offers incredible lunches and dinners. All their food is prepared in-house, with made-to-order pasta and hand-cut USDA aged steaks, and arguably the best carrot cake you’ll ever have.

And when your family has trouble agreeing on what to eat, head over to Kingdom City to the Banded Rooster Bar & Grill. Enjoy an extensive menu, with sides like to-die-for mac and cheese.

Food also figures large in a few upcoming events in Callaway County.

Aug. 30-Sep. 1: Mokane Worlds Fair has been a fixture in the area since 1950 and it’s the second stop on the Callaway County Mutton Trail. Many Callawegians will tell you that when it comes to barbecue, you have to try the tangy taste of mutton. Come for the meat, stay for the fun … at the Mokane Lions Club Park.
